In canto XXVII of Dante’s purgatory Dante uses the idea that dreams are prophetic to present several allegorical ideals.  First, that there are two aspects to spiritual development, faith and works. Second, that all men should reflect gods will in action and thought. Third that until they do his will they will be incomplete. And finally that by mastering both aspects of faith and works perfection can be achieved.
